Wine is a very vast and complicated topic. It is a drink that has been around for several thousand years and has spanned many different cultures. Interestingly enough, this beverage developed in cultures that were completely isolated from one another, yet somehow not only came up with the same or similar processes to make wine, but also used wine for many of the same reasons like celebrations, ceremonies and religious services. It is interesting that people the world over, irregardless of their culture, largely view wine the same way.
Then again maybe it is not too surprising that people would come to essentially the same conclusions about it. I have travelled fairly extensively across all parts of this world and if there is one thing I can say with absolute certainty is that when push comes to shove people are people. We all tend to think the same, feel the same, and dream about the same things. So I guess I should not be too surprised that we would all generally come to the same conclusions about this particular beverage.
One part of the world where this does not hold true is with many parts of Asia. If you have ever been to Japan, China, Thailand, Malaysia or other countries in the region you may have noticed that wine is not that easy to come by and most restaurants that do carry a bottle or two do not carry anything that is particularly good. I love travelling through Asia and when I was in China I always found the lack of good wine to be rather vexing.
However it seems that this is something that is slowly changing. Especially in China. Recently I was browsing through a local wine store when I came across something rather surprising: A bottle of ice wine from the Liaoning province of China. While I was surprised by this there is a certain amount of sense to it as well. If you have ever been to Norther China you are probably well aware of the fact that it gets rather cold up there and is uniquely suited to the production of ice wine.
